27th October 2010 Nankersey Rowing Club 2nd AGM
Our 2nd AGM was held in the Flushing Village Club on Wednesday 27th October. There was a good turnout of supporters, rowers and prospective committee members, who were all well engaged by the chairman Anne Oliver who gave her report of the activities of the Club over the last twelve months. For details click here .
Susan Wilson then gave a comprehensive Treasurer's Report, confirming the details described in The Chairman's Report above.
Nick Slade then proposed a change to the voting rules that allowed members of the Commitee to remain on the Commitee for more than three years, which would give stability to the Club during its formative years. This was passed.
Elections then took place, and the only change to the key positions were the appointment of Nick Slade as Vice-Chairman. Full details of the committee members are on the Contact page
The AGM was concluded by a visit to the Royal Standard

NEWQUAY PART 2 MENS!
Hi All
September 2010
SATURDAY MIX AND MATCH
It's not just about hard training, but the pleasure of getting out on the water with new friends and going for a row. The forecast for this Saturday was pretty poor, - heavy rain and strong winds overnight, with showers til later morning, - but in the event the wind had dropped, any rain had passed through, and the conditions were ideal for a gentle row to St Mawes. JB coxing, and the motley mix and match of Sue and Ken, Linda, daughter Zoe, Gary, Wendy (birthday girl!), her brother Peter (all the way from Plymouth), and her daughter Willow, - (free rides were available!). And when we got there, and docked on the beach, we found it was the St Mawes Fish Festival! But first a drink in the sun at the local cafe and for one of us (?) a chocolate brownie that was just too tempting! Then it was back on the gig with fresh scallops and mackerel fillets for some, a change round in crew positions, and the sun still shining.
What a very pleasant way to spend a morning! Happy Birthday Wendy!

LADIES NEWQUAY!
PRESS RELEASE!
To celebrate, club members visited their boat builder, Andrew Nancarrow at Bissoe and gave him the good news. The opportunity also gave members to see how the building of their new boat is getting on. The keel has been laid and the moulds are in place to receive the planking.
Nankerseys new boat has the kudos of being the first Cornish pilot gig for almost 10 years, and certainly the first of the 21st Century, of being built out of Cornish Elm.
This elm has been sourced by Flushing resident, Jo Burbridge, a sawmiller (www.josawmills.co.uk). He approached the Club knowing they were looking to build a second build, he subsequently made contact with Andrew and now Nankersey's boat is on the way.....the new name is yet to be decided but range from Pencarven & Nankersey to Selene & Alargh Gwyn (white swan in Cornish and the clubs logo!)

New Boat Names – ITS ON ITS WAY, BUT WHAT WILL IT BE CALLED… please check out suggestions on our Boat Page….
We have had a busy summer with lots of things happening, not only rowing!
An open air quiz night produced over £100 for the coffers and thanks must go to Lucy for organising this lovely evening. Congratulations to Stans Crew on showing everyone how brainy they were!
Flushing Carnival week saw NRC dressed as ½ sailors and ½ swine! Read our Boat Page to find out why and check out the photos page to see Circe and Ulysyss!!!!
Don’t let Amy cox the gig whatever you do!! Low Spring tides on 11th August 2010….Channel Creek, just below Trelissick House.
This summer saw Tall Ship Salomon visit Falmouth for two weeks.

Anne, with her Tall Ship hat on, visited the crew and offered to take the crew out – firm friendships have been made and the boys from around the world learnt how to row gigs during their stay. NRC enjoyed a couple of BBQ’s on board the ship and challenged both crew cadets to racing around the harbour.
Check out their website to find out what the Boys are up to now….www.jugendschiffe.ch

Circe had a lovely trip out in Falmouth Classics Week to watch the Red Arrows…
A mixed veterans crew entered the Two Castles Race this and came 19th our of 21, beating both a Devoran and Truro crew… Racing the following week saw mixed vets come 3rd out of 6th and the Mens 6th….
Nankersey Rowing Club enjoyed a regatta courtesy of Truro River Rowing Club. A first for Truro, the fun event was held from Turnaware Beach and extended down into Carrick Roads in a kite shaped course. Nine gigs attended, including boats from Nankersey, Roseland, Devoran, Falmouth, Fowey and Penryn. Nankersey fielded crews in each event with LA 5th, LB 5th, MA 6th, MB 5th, Juniors 4th, Mixed 3rd and Veterans 2nd Both Vets and Junior crews were mixed with Truro - Nankersey Juniors taking part in their first ever race! All agreed that despite the bank holiday weather, Truro had hosted a great fun, small and friendly event and the cakes were delicious!
May 2010
Nankersey Rowing Club took part in their second Truro River Race this weekend... A total of 22 craft of all shapes and sizes started at Mylor Harbour and finished 7 miles later at Boscawen Park, Truro. An all mens crew rowed Circe and finished as second mens gig crew over the line, passing five other craft on their way.... it took the boys exactly one hour to complete the course and after a quick turnaround and crew change, Circe was rowed back home in the evening sunshine...

SCILLIES - WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010...........Nankersey Rowers have returned from their 2nd World Championships on Isles of Scillies with their first trophy! Five crews attended this years event, with the Club borrowing a boat from boat Swanage and Appledore to ensure all club members had a row.
With a constant north easterly wind, but sunshine, the weekend proved to be hard work for the River Rowers who have been training since January, however over the weekend, both mens crews won heats enabling them to rise through the league tables and the ladies B won their final heat ensuring they took a trophy home to flushing. The Ladies B contained five novice rowers, with one rower only having joined the crew six weeks ago - they said of the weekend, 'it has been truly memorable and such a buzz, but to have won on top of this has really made our day - the team spirit from all club rowing members and supporters has been fantastic!' See Ken's poem
The club are now looking forward to the start of their new boat build - £15,000 has been raised to date by way of a Sport England Grant, sponsorship from Scrace & Co, Golders Associates & Morgan Bradbury as well as the sale of planks. Sponsors also provided race T Shirts for the crews for this years racing.
April 2010
After a two months wait, it was confirmed last week (25th March) that NRC is to received £10,000 from Sport England Small Grants Programme. The cash will partially fund a new Cornish pilot competition gig for the Club. The aim is to get more people involved with the Club and the additional boat will allow more to take to the water.
As well as enabling junior, ladies, mens and veteran crews to train alongside each other, the new boat will enable the club to compete on more equal terms within the local pilot gig community. The gig has been ordered from Andrew Nancarrow in Bissoe and will be started last week April/first week in May and should be with us sometime in October/November - funds permitting!
March saw several of NRC club members take part in the British Rowing Coastal Coxing Certificate - wanna be coxes including Jill, Lucy, Athina, JB, Pat & Anne took to the water alongside theory sessions to complete this course.... any other member interested can receive downloads of the course and a club coxes session will be available soon to put all our leaning into practice - all other wanna be coxes are welcome!!!! please email your Rowing Captain, JB if interested in taking part.
NRC have been in talks with Tremough Campus and are now the affiliated gig club to the University.... Already 21 students have taken up the challenge and on Sunday a variety of nationalities from the Uni filled the boat; Brazil, Germany, Finland, Ireland and a couple of English!! It is hoped that the students will have their own set times to take out Circe and join in with the club for racing and social events....
Fundraising has begun in earnest to purchase a badly needed 2nd Cornish Pilot Gig.... Andrew Nancarrow will be building our new boat, providing we can find £19,600! Grant funding applications have been sent out and local businesses are being approached... However we are also selling 64th's.... if you would like to purchase a share in the new boat, it will cost you £180... further information can be requested by emailing anne@manaclidgey.fsnet.co.uk.... we look forward to hearing from you!
Another successful Quiz Night was held at the Royal Standard in Flushing on 20th January (thanks to Mick & Sue who joined in whilst on holiday in our lovely village!!)... With £60 raised on the night, further donations were received from residents via a box in the Village Shop and the club was able to donate £150 to SHELTERBOX.
World Pilot Gig Chamionships 2010 training starts on the water on 7th February... watch the emails for crew training times and check out the club calendar....
Nankersey Rowing Club were accepted into the Cornish Pilot Gig Association on Sunday 17th January 2010 - this means we are now 'in the loop' for race invite, including starred events....
Several NRC club members joined Truro River Rowing Club with members from Devoran, Torridge and Fowey at the launch of Truro's new Pilot Gig 'Messack'. Despite a chilly easterly wind, Messack was named by the local vicar with a bottle of champers, launched with the under 16's rowing on the maiden voyage. Nankersey were thanked for purchasing Circe and so providing the deposit for Truros new boat!
Circe is now at Goonreeve Farm, just past Enys Gardens and sits with Richard Lander, Fear Not and Morlader. She has been left to dry and stripped right back. Various repairs have been made on the hull and she is ready for priming and undercoat - to be followed by a top coat...we then need to flip her over, lightly sand inside and paint after repairs have been completed.... please keep an eye on the calendar and emails!
Next Quiz Night at the Royal Standard will be on Wednesday 20th January 2010. Come along with your team of four and test your brains!
