14th November 2011 Nankersey Rowing Club QUIZ NIGHT

As promised by Rebecca, this would not be as tough as the previous quiz, and so it proved, - marks were higher, and we all learned a lot more about the collective names for animals (eg a float of crocodiles, a tin of sardines, - sorry, that should be family). An enjoyable evening, and fun competition. So, who won? First place, (and preparing our next competition on Monday 19th December, - Christmas theme) "That End", - captain Simon, helped by Steve, Cheryl, Anne, and later John: second was "GB 99", - headed by Gary, and third, "Sam's crew", - well done the dog! Last were holiday makers from The Point, "Hopeless from Heartfordshire". My highlight was a reasoned calculation of the distance of the Cornish Coastal Path, over-riding my team mates. I was only 50 miles out, (with a choice of three answers!). Anyone want a team member?? Do come along to our next quiz, - and warm up with The POSH Ball at the Village Club Saturday 26th November.

9th November 2011 Nankersey Rowing Club 3rd AGM

Our 3rd AGM was held in the freshly painted Flushing Village Club (resplendent with new picture!) on Tuesday 9th November. There was a good turnout of supporters, rowers and prospective committee members, who were all well entertained by the chairman Anne Oliver who gave her third AGM report of the activities of the Club over the last twelve months. Susan Wilson then gave a good overview of the accounts in her Treasurer's Report, confirming the details described in The Chairman's Report above. Elections then took place under the guidance of temporary chairman Ken Cooper, one of the trustees. The voting for the positions available was unanimous. Anne Oliver was re-elected Chairman, Lucy Rose Vice-Chairman, Sylvia Geach Treasurer, Sue Cooper Secretary, Athina Wellman Membership, and John Ball Rowing Captain. Tea Tverin will be the Child Protection and Welfare Officer and Oliver Maskrey the Student Liaison officer. Other committee members elected were Jill Claringbold, Jackie Hatcliffe, Annie Holmes, and Alice McKinnon. Full details of the committee members are on the Contact page.

Thanks were expressed to Susan Wilson for her stewardship of the accounts over the last three years.

The AGM was concluded by a visit to the Royal Standard

17 October Royal Standard Quiz Night Wow! Was this a challenge! Last month's winner's demonstrated why they had won, and yours truly was nearly a wooden spoon winner... As for the anagrams....! Still, - the company was very good, people were well entertained, and even those not taking part had a good time, and left with happy memories of a friendly Club with a good mix of "knowledgeable" and "not so knowledgeable" members...Many congratulations to the winners, who are looking forward to setting next month's questions, - my inside contact says they'll be a bit easier! PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN DATE, - not third, but SECOND MONDAY, 14th November.

9 October   Picnic and Try a Row Day!

students09.10.11astudents09.10.11b This was a well taken opportunity for all new rowers to get down to the beach and meet up and try rowing in one of our two gigs. Notwithstanding somewhat gloomy weather, there was a good number present on the beach prepared to try out rowing for the first time, and judging from the response a good number will be signing up. We offer a very warm welcome to all of you, and we hope this will be the beginning of a new love for the sea and long lasting friendships on and off the water. Our thanks to Ollie and Lucy in particular, and all those that contributed in time and food!

19 September Royal Standard Quiz Night

A splendid evening was enjoyed by all, with questions set by Anne and JB. With a good number of tables and teams participating, the first prize went to a holiday-team from Derbyshire, who regretted that would be unable to perform the winner's duty of preparing the next set of questions for the next quiz! Second prize went again to a table of holiday makers, so the honour finally went to Kingsley and Liz, - bless them both!!

27th August Penryn Fair,- were you there!

Club members were out all day pounding the streets and advertising the joys of gig rowing to the Penryn community. Occasional showers made for sometimes damp raffle tickets but hey, we collected £313 over the course of the day, and we have several potential rowers who want to come along and have a go.

22nd August Out with the BATS again!

The BATS so enjoyed their previous outing with us that on Monday 22nd another row was organised. This time we took out two boats and by the time we reached the far side of the river the crews were ready to race. Four short races were runbbetween various buoys. After the first race which was won by Anne's'crew, both boats matched up pretty evenly. A great evening thoroughly enjoyed by everybody. Well done all concerned.

25th July Nankersey Rowing Club support BATS (BLIND AT SEA)

BATS

On Monday our Club once again fulfilled its specific support of BATs by taking out a number of sighted and unsighted mixed crews for rowing on Carrick Roads. Meeting at Mylor, the crews went out and had fun working / practising together on our gig CIRCE. Four crews went out in total, with Lucy doing a wonderful job with each, so that at the end of each row all the crews were rowing in harmony.

It was a wonderful evening, much enjoyed by all who participated, and we look forward to a similar event next year

Nankersey Rowing Club won the award for the best group in the Carnival, resplendent in their witches brew of black dresses and tall pointy hats, (that's just the men!!) and broomsticks rather than oars (is this a hint for a new strategy?) Circe and Serafina would have been proud of their proteges, - just reward for all that the Club has done since its inception in supporting the Regatta and encouraging rowing for the serious and enjoyment for supporters alike More Pictures under Flushing Regatta 2011

Ist JUNE Post Scillies Social Bash

What a brilliant evening! Held at the Royal Standard, fortified with splendind servings of various curries, pompadoms, naan bread and of course amply lubricated, Nankersey Rowing Club held its End of Scillies Bash in celebration of their great week-end a month ago. With a good turn out of rowers and supporters, the evening was spiced with our very own Lucy leading the memories with reading Ken's poem and then awarding prizes for dummies, goodies and rowers awards for each crew (more detail to come). Special mention was made of Sue Cooper for her unstinting support of all the crews in training and at Scillies, Annie Oliver for everything that she does for the Club and JB for his mammoth efforts in sorting out all the crews. And let's not forget Lucy for all her organising and support. Indeed everyone at the Club has played their part in making us the happy Club that we are, - "All for one and one for all "...

Our Club had a very challenging week-end, with numerous set-backs. But we all rallied round one another, and gained in that awareness of fellowship and care that is the strength and hallmark of Nankersey. Thankyou to everyone that took part, whether rowing or supporting, especially those who "rowed the extra mile" in support of their fellow members.

Truro River Race Sunday 3rd April

Truro River Race Crew 2011
After six hours of rowing, the triumphant crew arrived at nightfall after taking a wrong turn!

With just under four weeks to go until the World Championships at the Isles of Scilly, Nankersey Rowing Club took the opportunity of some extra training by competing in the Annual Truro River Race organized by Penryn Rowing Club.

With entrants including fellow pilot gigs, coastal sliding seats, skiffs and flash boats, all were given staggered start times at Mylor Harbour leading to a pursuit race to Boscawen Park in Truro - seven miles....Nankersey entered their new pilot gig Serafina, launched in February.

Nankersey entered a Mens B crew (with a ladies B member to help out!) with Amy coxing her first race and, starting last, finished the race in one hour, four minutes and 49 seconds, beating two other gigs on time.

Celebrations were held with tea and cake at Truro Cricket Clubhouse before a swap over of crews, with Ladies B taking Serafina home again to Mylor, enjoying the evening sun on the way home..... A great day had by all....

24th March 2011: Pandora tragedy seen from Serafina late afternoon

The destruction by fire of the famous and much loved Pandora Inn has stunned us all. Disbelief was the first re-action, followed by great sorrow for the loss of such a landmark and well known meeting / drinking and eating place. All the gig crews in the region would have stopped here for refreshment and a well earned break, - our own crews being no exception. Our members send their condolences to all those affected by this tragic event pandora5 Click here for more photos

11th March 2011 Pre-Scillies Bash!!

A great time was had by all who came to the pre-Scillies bash on Friday. The evening was designed to build on the team work already developed in the training for the World Championships in the Scillies in late April / May, with team games based on the gig crews, and bring and share food providing a variety of nourishment. Within our Club membership we have our very own sports therapist Thea who shared her skills with all those present, - including supporters, and with sterling help from Lucy the evening demonstrated the value of commitment, fun and positive thinking. A series of games and challenges led to a very close finish between the teams, with "Mix and Match" the final winners, just beating Men's A, -well done Alice, Sue, Gary, Rebecca, Emily, Zoë and Izzy.

5th February 2011: SERAFINA'S LAUNCH

OUR NEW BOAT - SERAFINA NOW LAUNCHED 5th February 2011!!

GREAT DAY DESPITE THE WIND!

Serafina's Launch by David Barnicoat of The Packet newspaper

Nankersey Rowing Club celebrated in style on Saturday 5th February as their new Cornish Pilot Gig 'Serafina' was launched in Flushing.

With over a 100 villagers, club members and friends from neighbouring clubs, the Service of Dedication started promptly at 11am with a welcome from the Chairman, Anne Oliver followed by The Right Reverend Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro conducting proceedings in blustery but dry conditions.

Both Serafina and Circe (the clubs 1st boat) looked splendid on the beach and Nankersey Male Choir started the service with the song of the sea ' Eternal Father Strong to Save'. A poem was specially written by Trustee Ken Cooper and read by fellow Trustee Anthony Oliver, along with an extract from Phillip Pullmans Dark Materials, read by Stella Pilsworth - this was read as Serafina Pekkala was the witch who helped Lyra escape Mrs Coulter....thus Serafina has a witch painted onto her rudder....the name was chosen by club members from among 30 suggestions including Nankersey, Pencarven and various Greek and Celtic god/esses.

Phillip Pullman sent best wishes to the club saying he was delighted to hear about Serafina and he hoped the spirits of the arctic would bless her and all who sailed in her....

After completing the service of dedication, Bishop Tim duly named Serafina using a bottle of Camel Valley, (a Cornish wine for a Cornish boat), ensuring club members were suitably doused! After the naming and accompanied by Nankersey Male Choir singing 'Will Your Anchor Hold', Bishop Tim gamely enjoyed a maiden row in Serafina, proving he is not too bad with an oar!! It was then off to the Royal Standard to celebrate with more Camel Valley, tea and cakes!

Serafina, built by local boat builder Andrew Nancarrow (his 13th!) is the first Cornish pilot gig to be built of Cornish elm in ten years, the wood sourced from Trevarno Gardens, by local sawmiller Jo Burbridge, a Flushing resident.

The £20,000 needed to build Serafina was raised in seven months with funding from Sport England, Grass Roots and local companies including Golder Associates, Morgan Bradbury, Scrace & Co, Worshipful Company of Founders, Mylor Parish Council, Remington Hickes, the sale of planks and a lot of hard work from club members.

Said John Ball Rowing Captain, 'It was a lovely day and a very proud feeling for all those involved who have worked so hard to raise the money for Serafina. Our thanks go to all concerned who have supported our young but ever growing club'.

Bishop Tim celebrates with Nankersey Rowing Club, raising a toast towards Serafina on her maiden voyage! &

The following message has been received by John Chapman from Philip Pullman, the author of Dark Materials, from which the name Serafina was found.
"John - thank you very much for the pictures. I think you must all be very tough and hardy in Cornwall - the water looked far from inviting. But Serafina is a very pretty boat, and it's delightful to see her on the water. I wish her and her crew every success. And one day, who knows, if I find myself nearby, I shall ask for a little voyage, and I'll be happy to pull an oar."

19th January 2011: FUNDRAISING UPDATE - GREAT PROGRESS!

After seven months hard work fundraising from all club members for their new build, a surprise cheque arrived on New Years Eve to complete the payment for Serafina.

Local benefactor Remington Hickes came across Nankerseys Fundraising chart and noted the club had a shortfall of £2,000 - there and then, he took out his cheque book and paid the shortfall!

Remington said, he had been quietly watching the progress of the club and wished to help out what he saw as an inspirational club, there for all the community to join in....

He visited the New Build with our Chairman, on 12th January and met Andrew Nancarrow, our boat builder and was pleased to see the tradition of wooden boat building being kept alive. Remington was given a tour of the boatshed followed by a visit to the clubs 'field' where Circe and the trailer is kept. A visit was also taken to Tyrone Snell Trailers to order a trailer for Serafina and Remington, much to the delight of Anne, produced a cheque for the deposit!!

Anne said 'Remington has been like our Fairy God Father - he wishes to put something back into the community and feels that Nankersey Rowing Club is the way to do it. We are all delighted by his generosity'.

Funding to date has come from the following:

£10,000 Sport England

£2,500 Grass Roots

£2,000 Remington Hickes

£500 Golders Associated

£250 Scrace & Co

The sale of 30 planks at £180 each....(a further four were sold on the eve of 17th January - in the pub!)

£500 The Worshipful Company of Founders for Oars

£450 Mylor Parish Council for Oars

A HUGE THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF THE SUPPORTERS, FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTORS AND CLUB MEMBERS - HERE'S TO SERAFINA'S LAUNCH ON 5TH FEB AT 11AM......click here for Events

17th January 2011 A celebration of the life of Sheila Welman, a truly great supporter of our Club.

sheila

Today witnessed the celebration of the life of Sheila Wellman, the mother of our Membership Secretary, Athina, and one of our greatest supporters.

Following a private family cremation, the Reverend Roger Nicholls led a well-attended Service of Thanksgiving in St Mylor Church. This was followed by light refreshments in the Mylor Yacht Club, in which was a lovely montage of pictures of Sheila, demonstrating the variety, fun and fullness of her life. We all feel privileged to have known her.

Sheila was one of the greatest supporters of Nankersey Rowing Club and was often to be seen on the beach during an event taking careful note of the results. She made several trips to the World Championships in the Isles of Scilly and, regardless of the weather, she would sit on the beach enjoying the camaraderie while kindly keeping an eye on rowers’ belongings and always had an encouraging word whatever the result. Despite failing health she was amazingly cheerful and her friendly warmth will be sadly missed.

Tall Ship Visits - Sea Cloud and Lord Nelson over 2nd May Bank holiday

New Clothing in stock..

This week saw a presentation from The Worshipful Company of Founders of £500 to Nankersey Rowing Club.  Liveryman, Jeremy Knight who lives in Penryn has become involved in the rowing club and offered to source some funds for the new boat and equipment.  The Worshipful Company of Founders is one of the oldest livery Companies in London, tracing its routes back to 1365, and was one of the earliest medieval guilds formed to protect the interests of its members and to promote high quality workmanship in articles of bronze and brass.  Today the company manages seven charities, the bulk of which is spent on educational grants and bursaries, but awards are also made in other areas to small charities or individuals.

The Company has very generously provided money towards a new set of Junior lightweight oars thus enabling the youngsters of Nankersey Rowing Club to maintain and improve not only their rowing and education on the water but to allow the juniors to develop their team building skills.

The grant from The Worshipful Company was followed a few days later by a generous donation from Mylor Parish Council of £450, which means the Club should have the new oars sometime in the new year.

Said Anne Oliver, Chairman, 'we are delighted with the support from both the Company of Founders and the Parish Council.  These monies will go along way to help our junior crew expand and enable to club to provide participation of the whole community in the sport of rowing.  Our new gig arrives in January and having two boats will enable the club to not only increase training opportunities, but provide fun and enjoyment in a marine environment.'

The new boat will be named by the Right Reverend Tim Thornton, Bishop of Truro on Saturday 5th February 2011.  If you would like further information on the rowing club,. please visit the website on www.nankerseyrowingclub.com
