WORLD PILOT GIG CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013
WE SALUTE EVERYONE THAT WENT – WORLD CHAMPIONS ALL!!
After months of training, both in the gym and on the water, the gig world came together for the 2013 World Championships. The numbers of gigs keeps increasing, – this year there were 130, and two of them were ours, – CIRCE and SERAFINA!! We entered Ladies Vets, (25/48) Ladies A (53/125) and B (94/125), and Men’s A ((71/127) and B (107/127). We were unique in that not only was every boat cheered racing in to the finish but also cheered on their outward journeys to the start. How proud we are of all those that took part! And special congratulations to those who were attending for the first time, – yes, it really was WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS !! Well done everyone!!
More detail will be coming on News and lots of pictures on the photos link…..

News achive November 10th 2012 SPORTIVATE SUCCESS
Now here’s something to warm the heart, – not just the great personal testimony of Alice, but the whole link to the Olympics with Sports Activate and Nankersey Rowing Club. Let the youtube video speak for itself.
Message from Kate Dale, Head of Brand Communications: “The film of Nankersey was premiered at a special community sport exhibition at the House of Commons. It is now part of a travelling Sport England exhibition that will be used across the country throughout the summer to promote grassroots sport. It may also feature on the live sites that will be broadcasting the London 2012 Games in cities across the country this summer. So it’s fair to say this will be very much part of the promotion of the legacy that London 2012 and Sport England are already delivering to grassroots sport.”

Nankersey Rowing Club – potted history
KOWETHAS ROEVYA NANSKORSI (formerly Flushing Rowing Club)
How did we start?
In July 2008, four like minded residents of the small village of Flushing, Cornwall, decided to bring rowing back in the community of Flushing so that it was available for everyone. Together they purchased a Flashboat ‘Kernow’ from Calstock Rowing Club. This produced much interest in the village and they were approached by a resident who offered a substantial loan, enabling them to purchase the Cornish Pilot Gig ‘Circe’ from Truro River Rowing Club. A committee was formed and a logo drawn up by Tom Hyde, a newcomer both to the village and rowing.
The boats were refurbished by a small band of enthusiastic members under the guidance of local resident Malcolm Fairweather and repainted in club colours of blue and white.
The boats are now kept at Windsport, Mylor Harbour. Rowing takes place every Saturday and Sunday morning with mix and match crews, whilst racing crews get together during the week and weekends to train. Rows can be booked on our Rowing Calendar ensuring you are able to row at a time convenient to you. We have a ‘Try Before You Buy’ system which entitles you to four rows before you become a member – just to make sure you like it first! (On joining the club, you are given access to the calendar)..
Swans on River Fal – the inspiration behind our logo..
In January 2009 we received the good news that we had been awarded a grant of almost £6000 from “Awards For All”. This provided for a new cover, new oars, new trailer, and additional safety equipment.
Following a succesful year, we ordered a second boat (Serafina) from local boat builder, Andrew Nancarrow, and with this came the hard work of raising £20,000. We received an award of £10,000 from Sport England, £2,500 from Cornwall Community Foundatioin Grass Rots, £1,000 from Co-operative Community Fund, and advertising sponsorships / donations were received from Golder Associates, Morgan Bradbury, Scrace & Co.
The remainder was sought from Club members, friends, relatives, holidaymakers, – infact anyone who showed an interest, – in the form of 64th shares in the boat. Local Resident Remington Hickes purchased £2000 worth of planks.
Cornish Elm was used to build Serafina and was sourced from Trevarno Gardens by local saw miller Jo Burbridge, making Serafina the first Cornish Pilot Gig to be built of Cornish wood in ten years. For details about our boats see Boats Link
New junior / lightweight oars were funded from the Worshipful Company of Founders and Mylor Parish Council. .
We hope this new project will enable residents of Flushing and the surrounding area, old and young alike, to row, increasing health and fitness whilst having fun and enjoyment within the marine environment, also ensuring that the village of Flushing has a community based organisation which can be used by all and which can continue to grow with the support from like-minded residents.
Our name has been amended from Flushing Rowing Club to Nankersey Rowing Club (the old Cornish name for Flushing) to accommodate neighbouring clubs in the area – we are however the same club!
We would like to thank everyone for their continuing support and if you fancy joining us for a row, whether competitively or leisurely or even as a non-rowing supporter do make contact with one of the Committee
